Summer has tons of food items to indulge in: watermelons, pie, barbecue, burgers and hot dogs. But the most exciting summer food item of them all is our Florida spiny lobster. From casual lobster rolls to laid-back lobster bakes to comforting lobster bisque or grilled/ baked slathered in butter. The delightful lobster is summer’s most treasured ingredient of all. If you live near the coast or are visiting, there’s an even a better reason to celebrate; you can easily swim out and pick some of those crustaceans on your own.

In preparation for lobster mini-season, the third-annual Bug fest-by-the-Sea Dive Festival is hosting a voluntary party for the spiders of the sea. July 25th – August 2, 2014 at El Prado Park in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the mini-season kick-off party will bring together divers, food-lovers, partygoers and music to get the bug hunt going; the mini-season takes place on last Wednesday and Thursday in July.

The town of Fort Lauderdale features a series of fun and great events for divers and lobster lovers; a bug hunt with thousands of dollars in prizes, a seminar and a workshop, underwater photos and video contest, and a beachfront lobster cookout! Scuba Radio host Greg Holt and the Scuba Radio Mermaids are hosting. Guests can sign up for the Great Florida Bug Hunt Contest for a chance to win up to $15,000 in cash and prizes. In addition, attendees can get raffle tickets for the night’s drawing, in which two lucky divers will walk away with new dive equipment. There will be contest categories, including Biggest Lobster caught off the beach and off a boat.

El Prado Park is located on the ocean at 4500 El Mar Drive in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.
