Polo is a game played between two teams on horseback who use mallets to drive a wooden ball down the field to score against the opposing team. Polo is the oldest equestrian sport and is played in Wellington. The sport came to the United States in the 1950’s and the first polo club opened in 1954 in Palm Beach, nearby where the airport is today.
Today, Wellington is known for all things equestrian and is known as the Equestrian Capital of the World. The Palm Beach County village is home to the Palm Beach International Polo Club and the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. Visitors also flock to Wellington for the Palm Beach International Polo Season which is know until late April and the Winter Equestrian Festival which is also occurring now until April 1st.
